Meet the Delegates!

WomenRefugeesWelcome-Avatar.jpgThe Opening Borders: #WomenRefugeesWelcome delegation is bringing Nobel peace laureates Jody WilliamsShirin Ebadi and Tawakkol Karman together with members of the International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict to visit women fleeing war in Syria. Meet some of the incredible delegates joining the laureates on this trip.


Donna McKay is the Executive Director of Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), which uses science and medicine to stop human rights violations around the world. PHR’s efforts to tackle the Syrian refugee crisis include working to stop attacks on medical facilities in the region and end widespread sexual violence, as well as highlighting the critical need for increased humanitarian assistance to civilians. Giovanna Negretti is the Middle East Regional Director for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), an organization working for peace and social justice in the United States and around the world. AFSC received the Nobel Peace Prize along with the British Friends Service Council on behalf of all Quakers worldwide in 1947. Lena Ag is the Secretary General of the Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation, which is working to implement a broad women’s rights agenda creating space for women’s leadership, supporting women human rights defenders and building peace and security worldwide. Madeleine Rees is the Secretary General of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), an international non-governmental organization uniting women from around the world in non-violent peace building efforts. Rada Borić is the Executive Director & a lecturer at the Centre for Women’s Studies in Croatia. She was the program coordinator of the Center for Women War Victims in Zagreb during the conflicts in former Yugoslavia. Read our full profile of Rada.

Rola Hallam is a British-Syrian doctor and the Medical Director of Hand in Hand for Syria, an emergency aid organization set up shortly after the current Syrian conflict began in 2011. She currently works with doctors in Syria to plan and improve the delivery of medical aid. Learn more about Hand in Hand for Syria’s work.
