Nobel peace laureates Tawakkol KarmanShirin Ebadi and Jody Williams will lead a delegation of experts – including Physicians for Human Rights, Women’s International League for Peace and FreedomAmerican Fri

ends Services Committee and Hand in Hand for Syria - to meet with Syrian women seeking refuge from war. From Serbia to Croatia, Slovenia and Germany, the delegation will also meet with women-led grassroots groups working around the clock to support the thousands of Syrian women fleeing to safety.

The ongoing brutal war in Syria has led to a humanitarian crisis. Approximately 4 million Syrians are seeking refuge outside of Syria – women and children represent 75% of the refugee population. Syrian refugee women face increased risks of sexual violence along the route to Europe as well as in refugee camps. There are no specific laws to protect Syrian refugee women from gender-based violence and few women-specific services are available en route.

#WomenRefugeesWelcome will spotlight the experience of women refugees and will call on leaders to better address the specific needs of women fleeing war. The delegation will also highlight the essential work of countless volunteers and organizations at the forefront of this crisis. Above all, we will bring much-needed attention to the root causes of the refugee crisis and will add our voices to the growing chorus advocating for a nonviolent approach to bring peace to Syria.
